Air Fryer Buttermilk Fried Chicken

Air Fryer Buttermilk Fried Chicken

I must confess, fried chicken is my weakness! So, I wanted to create a recipe that allows a great deal of flavour while maintaining the juiciness of the meat. I also wanted it to be healthy enough that you could  eat as many pieces as you’d like without feeling guilty. The result: this recipe that marinates the chicken in a tasty buttermilk overnight and is then dipped in a seasoned flour coating before being fried in an air fryer.

This method infuses the meat with so much flavour while keeping it tender. Best part is it also cuts down your oil intake tremendously, so you won’t feel as guilty eating tons of it.

And it’s customizable. You can add any seasonings that you like, not just limit it to what I used. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you might have to fry the chicken in batches, in one layer. Therefore, you should only coat the chicken with flour when you are ready to place them in the air fryer, not before. Check out more of my air fryer tips at my website

Air Fryer Buttermilk Fried Chicken

  • For the chicken and marinade
    • 15 chicken legs, washed and cleaned, leaving some of the skin on, if you desire
    • 2 cups buttermilk
    • 3 teaspoons salt
    • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
    • 4-inch sprig fresh rosemary, chopped
    • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
    • 3 cloves garlic, coarsely crushed
  • For the seasoned flour:
    • 2 cups flour
    • 1 tablespoon baking powder
    • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
    • 1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
    • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • Oil for brushing the chicken and air fryer basket

  1. Mix all ingredients for the marinade and add the chicken pieces- let marinate overnight, or at least 6 hours. (I usually leave this overnight for Sunday lunch the next day.)
  2. Mix all ingredients for the seasoned flour.
  3. Preheat air fryer to 175°C.
  4. Coat the pieces of chicken that you will place in the air fryer. Remember you’ll be placing them in one even layer, careful not to overcrowd the basket.
  5. Spray or brush your air fryer basket with oil.
  6. Brush one side of your chicken pieces with some olive oil.
  7. Place the oiled side onto the base of the basket in one layer.
  8. Close your air fryer and air fry for 20 minutes.
  9. Open you air fryer and brush chicken pieces with oil. Very gently, flip each piece of chicken and air fry for another 15 minutes.
  10. Repeat with other pieces of chicken.
